{"id":16,"date":"2023-01-04T12:15:12","date_gmt":"2023-01-04T12:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.homeimprovementneed.com\/?p=16"},"modified":"2023-04-03T12:23:49","modified_gmt":"2023-04-03T12:23:49","slug":"vermont-furniture-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.homeimprovementneed.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/04\/vermont-furniture-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Vermont Furniture History"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><figcaption><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"30\">American Shaker Bedroom Furniture Sets are handmade in Vermont with the same timeless Shaker stylings and craftsmanship for which Vermont is famous for more than 250 years.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"13\">Our encyclopedia provides more information about the History of Vermont Made Furniture.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"6\">250 Years of Woodworking in Vermont and Furniture Making<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"32\">We received so much interest last year from customers regarding the history of Vermont-made furniture, that we created an\u00a0encyclopedia.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"19\">Did you know that Vermont&#8217;s furniture-making history can be traced back as far as the 17th century?<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"23\">In Vermont, almost all towns had woodworkers who made furniture, tools, and utensils by the 18th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"10\">During the 19th century, Vermont&#8217;s single largest manufacturing sector was wood products.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"8\">The export of Vermont&#8217;s wood products and furniture was initiated.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"37\">A thriving Vermont woodworking sector produced wood furniture, wooden cutting boards, wooden bowls, wooden bowling pins and bowls as well as wooden bowling pins and baskets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"1\">Forest To Furniture<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"26\">The Green Mountain Forest, which covered 90% of Vermont between 1760 and 1760, was perhaps the most important contributor to the growing fine furniture industry.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"22\">Vermont had extensive forests of many tree species, some as old as 300 years. They spanned 6 feet in diameter and 13 stories high.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"29\">Many Vermont towns were named after wood, which was what gave them their identity. They are now known for their lumber mills and the continuous succession of wood product manufacturers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"5\">Many Vermont Communities are built on woodworking<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"17\">The\u00a0Vermont furniture\u00a0industry and the wood industries were a source of income in some towns.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"12\">The technology and products evolved with the times to meet market demand and increase efficiency.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"27\">The owners of factories and mills became leaders in their communities and took on responsibility for their town&#8217;s commercial and civic growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"7\">Vermont Furniture Makers and Woodworkers of Note<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"34\">There were many master craftsmen from Vermont in the 18th and 19th centuries. They included artisans from Wilmington, Middlebury and Shaftsbury, Rutland and Charlotte.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"16\">George Stedman, Vermont, c. 1800-20; Asahel (b.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"18\">1759), and Martin (1778-c.1830) Cheney and Asahel (b.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"14\">Their work graced the offices and homes of the rich and famous around the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"2\">H.T.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"3\">H.T.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"31\">Vermont Tubbs,\u00a0Manchester Wood\u00a0are two other companies that helped to build the furniture-making industry in Vermont.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"4\">Vermont Tubbs (1840-2013).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"28\">Vermont Tubbs was established in 1840. It spent nearly 170 years making wood furniture in Brandon, VT.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"24\">The company generated an estimated $16million per year and employed 250+ workers in the early 2000s. However, it was struggling to make a profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"40\">Vermont Tubbs furniture was primarily a wholesale company that sold furniture to retailers across the country including LL Bean and Jordan&#8217;s Furniture as well as Bloomingdales and Restoration Hardware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"20\">The brand is known for its high-quality craftsmanship, solid wood construction, traditional designs, and exceptional quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"9\">Find out more about\u00a0Vermont Tubbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"11\">HT Cushman Manufacturing Company (1886-1980).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18\" src=\"http:\/\/www.homeimprovementneed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cushman-Colonial-Creations-Bennington-Vermont-e1566512583646-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.homeimprovementneed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cushman-Colonial-Creations-Bennington-Vermont-e1566512583646-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.homeimprovementneed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cushman-Colonial-Creations-Bennington-Vermont-e1566512583646.jpg 703w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"15\">H.T.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"43\">The H.T. Cushman Manufacturing Company was established in 1886. It spent nearly 100 years making furniture in Bennington.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"48\">Although the company started out building pencil boxes, coat racks, and hat hangers for its customers, they soon became known for their furniture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"45\">Hall W. Cushman, who was the third generation to run the business, sold the business to General Industries in 1964.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"35\">The facility was later sold to Green Mountain Furniture Co in 1971. It closed its doors in 1980.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"39\">Find out more about\u00a0HT Cushman.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"21\">Manchester Wood (1976-2018).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"44\">Manchester Wood was established in 1976. It has been making solid wood furniture in Vermont for 42 years.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"46\">The company employed nearly 200 people and generated $8-12 million in annual revenue at its peak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wordai-block rewrite-block enable-highlight\" data-id=\"56\">Clifford &#8220;Cliff&#8221; Pierce was the founder of Manchester Wood.
